Wit and whimsy and impeccable design. Known for infusing colorful inspiration (“Little Women on acid,” “1970s Sofia Coppola in Palm Beach”) into her work, interior designer Chloe Redmond Warner now brings her signature style to her debut book, THIS MUST BE THE PLACE: Homes with Atmosphere. Think of it like a personal design brief straight from the source, as Warner walks readers through her design process with playlists, pop-culture references, and tons of personality. It’s "atmospheric, personal, a little weird, and very intentional — pretty, but with substance,” she says of the lushly photographed tome. Formally trained in architecture, Warner was recently awarded House Beautiful’s “Next Wave Designer,” and has her own collection of textiles and wallpapers, RAD Goods. Based in Berkeley, Warner comes to Carmel this Friday, May 8 from 3-6 p.m. for a special Mother’s Day book signing at Shoshin. Ahead of the event, she’s spilling her secrets for sourcing everything from super luxe trees to smashburgers for your next romp around the Bay Area.

AM

01

Start the day with:

If I could have my way, I’d have a dirty chai delivered to me in bed. I like a blend from Good Eggs, and there’s a brand I love to order from Brooklyn called Dona Chai. I’m a real chai connoisseur. We also moved into a new neighborhood in Berkeley and it’s been such a change because there’s a vibrant retail, cafe, and smoothie scene. It’s been so nice to become a regular and have go-to spots. Cafe Reveille is where I go for my second dirty chai of the day.

02

PRO SHOP — Favorite home stores in the Bay Area:

The Vintage Rug Shop in Berkeley is adorable. We love shopping there for vases, quilts, ceramics, pillows. Really excellent textured neutral items. The Gardener, also in Berkeley—I almost walked out of there once with a $2,000 tree, but I couldn’t figure out how to move it. Those are the weird, wonderful things that I love to find at The Gardener though. It’s the first place I ever saw sell Tuscan grills. And flower bulbs that reliably pop off! BONUS: This is where I buy my Linhart toothpaste.

Finding inspiration:

I love the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA). They spent a ton of money on the building, designed by top-drawer architecture firm, Diller Scofidio + Renfro. It has amazing presence, amazing flow, and, most critically, an amazing gift shop.

A hidden gem in Berkeley that you love to share:

My favorite place to recommend is a burger spot that serves outdoor smash burgers called The Station in Berkeley. It’s my kids’ favorite restaurant. You wouldn't think someone as fussy as myself would recommend a burger spot, but The Station has excellent burgers and an even more excellent chicken banh-mi sandwich that you can order as a bowl if you want to satisfy your hippie California heart.

PM

Favorite way to end the day:

A cocktail at Pizzaiolo Oakland, period.

When visiting Carmel, your must-stop spots:

I’ve admired fellow designer Alexis Smith for years and we have been Instagram friends. I was secretly jealous when she opened, Shoshin, the most gorgeous store in Carmel. And someone told me to shop at Girl Boy Girl and that place has never steered me wrong.

One main takeaway you hope readers glean from your book:

Pay attention to what you love and act on it—small, intentional choices are what create a home that actually feels like you.
